Welcome to Haunted Washington, D.C. where the politicians out number the ghosts two to one. In addition to the scary tactics employed on Capitol Hill, ghosts abound this very historic, powerful, yet dark city. Relentless spirits of Civil War soldiers, dead presidents,  and hanged conspirators roam this federal city. Come explore its’ secrets and intrigue.

Haunted Places to Visit:

bulletThe Woodrow Wilson House, 2340 S St. NW (202) 387-4062.  Unexplained sounds and visitors have haunted this house for years. www.woodrowwilsonhouse.org
bulletThe Stephen Decatur House , 748 Jackson Pl. NW (202) 842-0920.    Stephen Decatur died tragically in a duel. Many ghostly apparitions have been sighted by staff. There is a heavy feeling of sadness in the room on the first floor where Stephen Decatur died.  www.decaturhouse.org
bulletThe White House (202) 208-1631. The Lincoln bedroom is reportedly haunted. Contact your local congress representative prior to your trip to get you passes. Otherwise, you will have to stand on a long line and wait hours.
bulletThe Capitol -  a demonic cat is said to run loose in the basement and appears just before significant negative events such as assassinations.
bulletFort McNair, 4th St. S.W. Where the Lincoln assassination, co-conspirators where  imprisoned and hanged. There have been sightings of on of the conspirators, Mary Surratt. Contact the Fort  in advance to arrange at tour. Not open to the public due to security concerns 
bulletFord's Theatre 511 10th St. NW (between E & F streets) (202) 426-6924 - this is the theatre where John Wilkes Booth shot President Lincoln.  A great exhibit in the basement from the Lincoln Assassination. Behind the theater is Baptist Alley where John Wilkes Booth mounted his waiting horse and began his escape through D.C. Then walk across the street to where Lincoln died. bulletThe U.S. Capitol - many reports from the Capitol Police of unexplained activity.
bulletStephen Decatur's House - Stephen Decatur died from injuries received in a dual at the Bladensburg Dueling Grounds. He died on the ground floor of the house. Staff report many apparition sightings.
bulletThe Octagon House. Now used by the Association of Architects. A young girl died by jumping off or falling over the stair railing and falling to her death. House filled with unexplained activity today.
bulletThe Blair House - Harry Truman complained of ghosts when he lived in the Blair House while the White House was being renovated during the 1940's.
bulletThe National Theatre - located on PA  Ave is a very historic theatre with a resident ghost. It  has experienced three fires and several re-buildings.   On the website it states: 

                   " For almost a century the National has been haunted by the friendly ghost of actor John     McCullough, reputedly shot and killed by a fellow performer. The two men argued while washing clothes in the Tiber Creek, which then flowed through the basement backstage. A rusty pistol, perhaps the murder weapon, was unearthed under the stage in 1982, near where McCullough's remains are rumored to lie in the earth beneath the stage. In Georgetown

bulletThe Exorcist Steps - located on M street in Georgetown across from the Key Bridge next to a gas station. Or enter from the top of the steps from Prospect Street near Georgetown University. Filming site of the movie "The Exorcist." House at the top of the stairs was used in the movie.
bulletThe Old Stone House, 3051 M St. NW (202) 426-6851. (Please note: this is a historic building not an office building). The oldest, haunted building in D.C. Mysteriously, a rolling pin rolls off the cupboard and lands in the middle of the kitchen floor without disrupting any dishes in it's path. Open for tours provided by the National Park Service.
